Ordering Questions
Do I need a prescription?
A VALID U.S. PRESCRIPTION IS REQURED to place an order on the DestinationRx website. We do not write any prescriptions, nor do we refer you to consulting physicians for prescriptions. You must have either an existing prescription (for refill orders) or a new prescription from your doctor.

Which pharmacies are shown?
DestinationRx has partnered with a number of online, mail-order, and retail pharmacies to bring you the pricing displayed. We strive to provide consumers with as much choice as possible. We are always looking for new pharmacies to add to our network so that we can negotiate the best drug prices possible.
Why couldn't I find a particular drug?
While DestinationRx attempts to compare prices for every drug that is available, you may find that we do not list a particular drug you are looking for. This may be because the drug is brand new or is no longer available.

How do I submit my prescription information if I order from an online or mail-order pharmacy?

On our website, choose the online or mail-order pharmacy you would like to order from and press the order button. You will be given instructions on how to contact the vendor and provide the necessary prescription information.

Pricing and Quantity Questions

The pricing that is displayed on this website is derived from the rates DestinationRx has negotiated with partner pharmacies.

Sometimes the price of my medication changes. Why?
There are many factors that determine the final price you pay for a medication. These include: ingredient costs, dispensing fees, and any applicable promotions or discounts from the manufacturer, distributor, or retailer. Each of these variables can change on a daily basis. DestinationRx makes every effort to update the prices on our website as frequently as possible. However, sometimes we are unable to keep up with each pharmacy's changes. Refer to the pharmacy itself to be sure of the current price of your drug.

Why do some pharmacies offer a 90-day supply of my medication, and others only offer a 30-day supply?
Online and mail-order pharmacies typically sell medications only in 90-day quantities. These companies save money by purchasing drugs in bulk. In turn, consumers save money by purchasing a three-month supply of their medications. In contrast to online and mail-order pharmacies, retail pharmacies have more flexibility and fill a much wider variety of prescription types. Their prices may not always be as low as online and mail-order pharmacies, but they can dispense drugs in 30-day quantities.

Lower Cost Drug Information
Are any of the lower cost options dangerous?
No. All of the drugs on our site have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for their safety. The lower-cost options may have advantages and/or disadvantages, which are thoroughly explained on our site. All options need to be discussed with a physician before a new prescription can be written.

Are generic drugs as good as brand name drugs?
The FDA only approves a generic drug for manufacture if it meets the same criteria as the brand name version. These include: having identical active ingredients, dosage, administration, cautions, warnings, product labeling, similar absorption rates, and consistency in manufacturing. In many cases generics are even produced in the same factories and on the same assembly lines as their brand-name counterparts. However, generic drugs are not acceptable in all cases. We utilize a national generic drug rating system to ensure that we identify generics only as appropriate.

How do I get approval for the lower-cost options?
We recommend using one of two methods for gaining approval from your physician:
- If you have decided on an option and you feel comfortable trying the new medication, you can send your physician a fax requesting a prescription change. Include a printed copy of your Summary Report, and note which option you prefer. Also write a short paragraph explaining why you are interested in changing medications, how you can be reached if your physician has any questions, and most importantly, how you want to receive your new prescription. For example, will you be picking it up? Do you want it called in to your pharmacist? Or would you prefer to have the prescription faxed back to you? Your physician receives a lot of these requests each day, so try to make your fax as clear and easy to process as possible.
- If you are unsure about switching medications, set up an appointment with your physician to discuss the alternatives. Be sure to bring a copy of your Summary Report with you for reference.

Is it safe to split pills?
Not all pills can be safely taken when split. We include pill splitting as an option only when the pill is made of a compound that can be safely split. When splitting pills, it is important to cut the pill into even halves.
What is the best way to split pills?
The best way to split pills is to use a Pill Splitter or Pill Cutter. These specially designed tools are available at most drugstores for less than $5.00.
Why are brand name drugs more expensive?
Brand name drugs are more expensive than generics for two primary reasons. First and foremost, the manufacturers have to recover the research and development costs of the drug while they still own the patent. Second, while a manufacturer owns a patent there are no drug price controls in place. Without the threat of competition, manufacturers are free to set their own prices.

Why doesn't my doctor agree with one of the drugs or doses?
The list of drugs and doses included on this site are only designed to show you the many options available for treating your medical condition(s). This list is determined based on the best sources available at the time and does involve some physician judgment. However, only your personal doctor knows your full medical history and can determine the best course of action for you. Therefore, it is still the sole responsibility of your physician to determine the appropriate drug treatment and dosage.

Why is the price shown on the tool different from what I paid at my local drugstore?
The prices used for the tool represent an average price for all drugstores. The actual price you pay may be slightly different based on where you live and/or which drugstore you use.
Why should I take a generic instead of a brand name drug?
Brand name drugs are more expensive than generics. In many cases, generic drugs save you money without sacrificing quality. For more information about generics, see the question: Are generic drugs as good as brand name drugs?

Will my doctor be offended if I ask for different medications?
Most doctors understand that patients need to save money and will not be offended if you ask to change medications. Doctors receive several of these requests each day from major insurance companies trying to keep their costs down. You are simply doing the same thing for yourself. Because your physician receives lots of these requests, try to make your request as clear and easy to process as possible.
